Preparing Windows for Winter
When winter comes, basically everything is cold. This means your electric bill is going to rise because the heaters would be turned on 24/7. So in preparation for winter you’ll need to inspect your furnace, ready your fire place, check all your exterior doors and windows, inspect your roof and gutters, also install or check smoke detectors for safety purposes, and prepare emergency kits.
Windows must be checked thoroughly because it’s where the hot air escapes from failed or fatigued caulking and bad installation of glass between the trim and window. To help store more heat inside your house try hanging thick and heavy curtains. If style is your concern, try using shutters or shades because they are thicker and look better also. Before it gets cold, try to substitute all the broken and cracked windows or pains of glass. Try choosing windows that are more durable because some windows break and crack when the weather gets colder. If possible try replacing your entire window with vinyl or fiber glasses because they are much more energy efficient. You may also want to install glass coatings and insulated glass units (IGU) because of their durability, insulating properties, and thermal performance.
But as we know technology tends to improve. That’s why IGU’s, tinted glass, low –emissivity Glass, spacers, and glass coatings were introduced. The higher the R-value the greater its chances in resisting heat transfer. R-value measures the effectiveness of insulated glass. To a certain degree, it also reduces the noises that are heard from the outside.
The advantages of using Glass Coatings and Insulated Glass Units include reduction of air infiltration and heat loss. They also reduce frost and condensation along the window and are also more durable. They can last at least 15 to 25 years. They will also greatly reduce your electric bills.
Don’t worry about the cost while buying and installing IGU’s because they tend to be expensive. But as time goes on you’ll see the difference on your electric bills, which, in fact, according to research, can save you as much as three months worth of electricity. So be smart and consider using IGU’s.
